The Detroit Lions got the win against Cincinnati Sunday, but they lost starting cornerback Terrion Arnold to a shoulder injury after he was carted off the field.

“Unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a while,” Head Coach Dan Campbell said. “He’s going to be out for a long time.”

Our prayers are with Arnold for a full recovery. The 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was growing into his role. He had 22 tackles and four passes defended, helping the Lions to a 4-1 record and first place in the NFC North.

The team is now forced to look at replacements in a suddenly thin secondary. D.J. Reed, the Lions’ other starting cornerback, is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, according to Eric Woodward of ESPN.

Where can Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes and Campbell look for help?

Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin is next man up behind Arnold at left cornerback. The seven-year veteran is 29 years old. He has two career interceptions in 84 games played, the last one coming in 2020. He will be targeted by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes when the Lions visit the Chiefs on Sunday.

Amik Robertson had six tackles and an interception against the Bengals playing in place of Reed at right cornerback. He has shown himself capable. At 5 feet and 9 inches tall, 183 pounds, though, the Lions may be in trouble when facing bigger receivers.

On the practice squad, the Lions can look to cornerbacks Erick Hallett, Nick Whiteside and Tre Flowers. Hallett is considered a nickel cornerback and safety. He was cut in August and signed to the practice squad. Second year Whiteside has good size, at 6 feet and 1 inch and 200 pounds, but is unproven in the NFL. He was on the Washington Commanders roster last season, but has not appeared in a game or recorded any stats, per ESPN. Flowers has played seven seasons for five teams. He is six feet and 3 inches, 203 pounds.

Brad Berreman, of Side Lion Report, names Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome as a possible trade candidate.

“Newsome was a first-round pick by the Browns in 2021, but as he plays on his fifth-year option this year there is no inclination they want to sign him to a contract extension. Trade rumors surrounding him go back through two offseasons, including indications the Lions had some interest in him early in the 2024 offseason.”

Newsome is guaranteed $13.377 million this year. The Lions have just more than $26 million in cap space this season, per Spotrac. Allocating half the team’s cap to one player is a lot, but Newsome is a good investment at a time when the Lions are viable Super Bowl contenders.

We can trust Holmes to make the best roster decision possible, but there is no time to waste. Quarterbacks coming up on the Lions schedule include Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Jayden Daniels, Jordan Love, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford.
