Many of the world’s best golfers will play in Detroit this week during the PGA Tour’s latest stop, the Rocket Classic, at Detroit Golf Club.
Last year’s winner, Australia’s Cam Davis, will seek to repeat. He also won the event in 2021.
“I would say an event like this definitely seems like a bright spot on the calendar,” Davis told Reuters and other reporters Tuesday. “Yeah, when things are a little rough and I’m finding it hard to get the best out of myself, going somewhere that you feel good just being there always is going to look really appetizing as it comes up.”
The Rocket Classic, first played in 2019, has quickly become one of the must see tournaments on the PGA Tour, known for its rowdy fans. The tournament has added two new fan decks, now six total, to immerse fans in the Rocket Classic experience. Perhaps the best seat in the house is The Treehouse, a perch behind the green on the par three fifth hole.
“The Treehouse has been moved closer to the fifth green to provide even better views and create an up-close feel like you’re sitting courtside at a Pistons game or behind home plate at a Tigers game,” per the Rocket Classic official website.
There will be top competition in this year’s tournament. Fan favorite and 2024 Rocket Classic champion Rickie Fowler will be in the field. Former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark will tee it up. Last week’s Travelers Championship winner, Keegan Bradley, will look to make it back-to-back victories and make selection for this year’s Ryder Cup more difficult. If Bradley continues to play well he may make himself a player-captain against Europe in September. Other notable players include Collin Morikawa, Akshay Bhatia and Ben Griffin.
Detroit Golf Club is a par 72 and plays at 7,370 yards. The Club has hosted the Rocket Classic five years. The 72-hole course record is 262, by Tony Finau (2022). The 18-hole record is 63, by Cameron Young (2022) and seven others. Young is picked to win this year’s tournament by PGA Tour’s betting experts Mike Glasscott and Christian Skaret. Morikawa has the best odds to win, however, at +1,200, per pgatour.com. Young is +2,800.
No matter who wins, it’s good to have professional golf in Detroit.
“The event has invested nearly $10 million in local charitable organizations since its inception in 2019, with a focus on closing the digital divide in Detroit through the Changing the Course initiative. The tournament also attracts a large number of visitors, boosting local businesses and creating revenue for the city,” according to the Rocket Classic website.
Tickets are available through the Rocket Classic website.
