The Detroit Pistons are an ascending team, poised to compete for a championship as soon as next season if the front office adds a scorer to take advantage of Cade Cunningham’s passing acumen.

Overall, the offense in 2024/2025 wasn’t bad. The Pistons ranked 12th in the NBA in scoring. Unfortunately for Detroit, the teams they need to beat to get to the NBA Finals rank above them.

Indiana scored the seventh most points per game in the regular season. Cleveland was the top scoring team in the NBA. New York ranked ninth in scoring.

Adding more offense is key, but who can fill that role? Here are a three trade targets for the Pistons to consider.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is in the middle of his prime. He’s averaged more than 30 points and 11 rebounds per game over the last three seasons. He’s a champion, Finals MVP, regular season MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. If Milwaukee is willing to trade him, move Heaven and Earth to get Giannis.

As I stated in my May 3 article

“No price in draft picks and players, apart from Cunningham, is too much to pay. In the Pistons’ favor is that Giannis wants to win and win now. He’s obsessed with winning more championships, and he may realize leaving Milwaukee is necessary to achieve championship heights again. Alongside Cunningham, Giannis could create a dynasty in Detroit.”

Detroit did not hesitate to extend Cunningham, and ownership seems willing to reward fan loyalty and engagement with adding a second max salary superstar. If Antetokounmpo’s $54 million salary next season is prohibitive, here are two other options.

Austin Reaves averaged 20.2 points per game last season. His salary will be $13.9 million next season. Reaves is nowhere near comparable to Antetokounmpo, but he won’t cost as much either. It’s also probable Reaves increases his points per game as a featured scorer in the Pistons offense. The Pistons likely can deal for Reaves without giving up the core of Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland.

Not sold on Reaves, but still looking for a bargain scorer compared to the cost to get and pay Giannis?

Jonathan Kuminga averaged 15.3 points per game, but that was in only 24 minutes per game. He has never earned enough trust from Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr to be a focal point of the offense, except when left without more preferred options.

The Pistons could unlock Kuminga. When he played 30 minutes or more in the playoffs, against Minnesota, when Steph Curry was injured, Kuminga scored 30, 23 and 26 points per game. The best part is, as a restricted free agent, the Pistons can sign Kuminga to a contract the Warriors can’t match. No trade necessary.

These are just three of a million possibilities the Pistons front office can consider. They should be in win now mode, and this offseason could position Detroit as a team poised to make a run for the 2026 NBA Championship.
