In a game many pundits thought would be a shootout, defense won the day. Jahmyr Gibbs’ big night cannot be discounted, but considering the rash of injuries to the Lions’ secondary, this win belongs to the defense. The Lions defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-9 at home on Monday Night Football.

The over/under of the game was 54.5 points, but the Lions’ defense combined an effective pass rush with tackling after the catch to stifle the Buccaneers’ offense. It helped that Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield was 0-10 at one point on throws over 20 yards. He was consistently high on his passes. The reason he was off-target so often was that Mayfield had little time to drop back and pass.

Aidan Hutchinson was aggressive and forceful. He had to be accounted for, and the Buccaneers dedicated at least two, and sometimes three, blockers to slow him down.

The game was not perfect. In what should have been a blowout, the Lions had costly mistakes. An ugly interception by Jared Goff led to a field goal by the Buccaneers at the end of the first half, keeping Tampa Bay in the game. There was a missed field goal, and a bad coaching decision to go for it on fourth down when a field goal would have made the lead two scores.

Jahmyr Gibbs was brilliant. He dashed through the line and into the end zone for a 78-yard touchdown run. He finished with 218 total yards and two touchdowns on only 20 touches (136 yards rushing, 82 yards receiving). Gibbs should be the focal point of the offense going forward.

Overall, a great win against a division leader. This is a win the Lions needed to get the bad taste of last week’s loss out of their mouths.

Next up, the Lions host the Vikings on Nov. 2 after their bye week.

The Lions now have the second best odds to win the Super Bowl, at +650, per DraftKings. They are favored to win the NFC.
