The Detroit Lions defense gave up 257 passing yards and three touchdowns to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday night, with Patrick Mahomes putting up a 132.2 passer rating. Were the refs a big part of the game? Unfortunately for the Lions, officiating was skewed in favor of the Chiefs in the loss, 17-30. Led by their head coach, the Lions are a make no excuses team, so they assessed what they could do better going forward and have added to the secondary.

“We weren’t able to get the points required,” said Dan Campbell after the loss, per Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com. “Seventeen is not enough. It’s not enough. It’s not close.”

“Maybe we needed this,” Campbell added. “Maybe we needed to get kicked around a little bit, because that’s what happened.”

In response to the defense giving up a big day through the air, the Lions have signed outside cornerback Kendall Fuller to the practice squad. Given the rash of injuries in the secondary, Fuller will likely be called up to the active roster when the Lions host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday night.

Fuller is a former third round pick, who has had a solid nine-year career, playing a total of 104 games. According to Jeremy Reisman, of Pride of Detroit,  Fuller started 11 games for Miami in 2024, “producing 50 tackles, seven pass breakups, a fumble recovery, and a decent 66.2 PFF grade.”

The addition of Fuller could be the help Detroit needs at outside corner while Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed recover from significant injuries. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield will test the Lions’ secondary, even as Tampa Bay is likely without key wide receivers. Mayfield has 1,539 yards and 12 touchdowns through six games this season, for a 108.5 passer rating.

DraftKings favors the Lions by 5.5 points, seeing them out-scoring the Buccaneers in a game that totals 52.5 points.
