The Detroit Lions are thin at cornerback, having lost D.J. Reed and Khalil Dorsey to injured reserve with a hamstring injury and wrist injury, respectively. Terrion Arnold is also expected out for a while, per Head Coach Dan Campbell, with a shoulder injury.
While the Lions did sign veteran Arthur Maulet to their practice squad Wednesday, two cornerbacks (and draft picks) were swapped by the Browns and Jaguars, one of which pundits had as a priority for the Lions to try to get.
The Browns have traded cornerback Greg Newsome to the Jaguars in exchange for cornerback Tyson Campbell, very likely removing both from the list of possibilities for the Lions to acquire this season.
Perhaps the Lions were not interested in either of them, as both come with significant salaries. Per Grant Gordon of NFL.com,
“Newsome is entering the final season of his rookie contract, having had his fifth-year option picked up and due $13.3 million this year. Campbell, however, signed a lofty four-year, $76 million extension in the summer of 2024. He had $13.1 million in guaranteed salary due in 2026, along with a $10.5 million cap number.”
Stay tuned as we follow the Lions and anticipate more moves to reinforce their secondary. And more moves seem necessary. Quarterbacks on the Lions’ remaining schedule include Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Jayden Daniels, Jordan Love, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford.
