Lions running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have tied the NFL record for most games where both score touchdowns in the same game. They currently stand at 14 games, tied with Dallas Cowboys teammates Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston, who reached the feat in 10 years, per Michael David Smith of NBC Sports. Gibbs and Montgomery have only taken three seasons.
Montgomery’s resurgence this season forces us to ask the question. Has he overtaken Gibbs as running back #1 in Detroit?
What do the stats say?
Gibbs has 70 carries for 325 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions first five games, an average of 4.6 yards per carry.
Montgomery has 61 carries for 310 yards and four touchdowns this season, an average of 5.1 yards per carry.
Gibbs has 22 catches, on 23 targets, for 112 yards and one touchdown, a 5.1-yard average per reception.
Montgomery has seven catches, on eight targets, for 41 yards without a touchdown, an average of 5.9 yards per reception.
Gibbs is out-touching Montgomery, but the latter has a higher per touch average. This may be frustrating for some fantasy football managers, but is perfect for keeping both backs healthy and fresh for a deep playoff run.
The Lions are legitimate Super Bowl contenders this season. DraftKings currently has them as the second favorite to win the Lombardi Trophy, at +650, only behind the Buffalo Bills (+475). Dan Campbell has his team playing smart and fierce football.
Keep it going. With Gibbs as the lightning to Montgomery’s thunder, combined with Goff distributing to a bounty of talented pass catchers, this offense can lead the team where it wants to go.
