The clock is ticking, and some big decisions loom for Scott Harris as he tries to guide the Tigers to World Series contention. For the first time in several years, Detroit will be buyers.

A deal was made on Monday to acquire starting pitcher Chris Paddack and relief pitcher Randy Dobnak. Paddack made his debut on Wednesday and performed well in his Tigers debut.

It won’t be the last move made by Harris. The question is, who will join this first place Tigers team, and who will depart the organization? In this article, I give four hypothetical trade scenarios that could take place before Thursday’s deadline.

Tigers Acquire 3B Eugenio Suarez from Arizona Diamondbacks

Tigers acquire: 3B Eugenio Suarez.

D-Backs acquire: No.7 prospect INF Hao-Yu Lee, No.28 prospect RHP RJ Petit.

This would be the dream trade for the Tigers before the deadline. A potent bat to put between Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene in the lineup would provide a much better offense. Suarez would return to the Tigers for his second stint with the franchise and play for Detroit for the first time since 2014.

Suarez was traded to the Reds 11 years ago in exchange for RHP Alfredo Simon, but the 34-year-old slugger has said publicly that he would love to return to the place where it all began. He has 36 home runs, ten more than Greene, who leads the Tigers in that category. He’s batting .247 with 87 RBIS and an .894 OPS.

“Geno” is in the final year of his contract, and would be the perfect rental to join the Tigers’ pursuit of a World Series. Lee (who was acquired in the 2023 trade deadline when Michael Lorenzen was dealt to Philly) would be a respectable return for Arizona. He is MLB ready on a number of teams. He has some good tools and enough potential to draw the attention of front offices. Lee is batting .241 in Toledo this season with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs, a .761 OPS and 17 stolen bases. He is a career .276 hitter with an .807 OPS throughout his years in different farm systems.

RJ Petit has a 6-2 record in 30 games, 50 K’s in 47.0 innings pitched, a 2.49 ERA, and 0.96 WHIP.

Tigers Acquire DH Marcel Ozuna from Atlanta Braves

Tigers acquire: DH Marcel Ozuna.

Braves acquire: No.24 prospect RHP Tyler Mattison, OF Jackson Strong.

Whether or not it’s a bat as potent as Suarez’s, the Tigers should acquire another bat by the deadline on Thursday. Although Ozuna isn’t as productive as he once was, he used to be a potent bat in the Braves’ lineup.

Despite his struggles, Ozuna would be a good addition to the team and would likely share the DH role with Kerry Carpenter. His numbers haven’t been good this season, but a change of scenery could do him some good. Ozuna is batting .236 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a .767 OPS. Although his consistency hasn’t been there, he still has solid power.

Mattison has a 4.95 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with Double-A Erie this season. In 17 appearances, he has struck out 18 batters in 20.0 innings pitched. Outfielder Jackson Strong is having a good season, batting .278 with five home runs, 39 RBIs, an .825 OPS, and 18 stolen bases.

Tigers Acquire RHP Jhoan Duran from Minnesota Twins

Tigers acquire RHP Jhoan Duran

Twins acquire RHP Ty Madden + Cash Considerations

The deadline would be a flop if the Tigers managed not to land a solid relief pitcher. The bullpen has performed miserably in recent weeks, and to be successful in the postseason, they have to be better on the mound late in games.

Detroit has already made one deal with the Twins, so why not another? Duran is one of the big ticket bullpen arms for the upcoming deadline. His fastball reaches 100+ MPH, and he would become one of the best relief pitchers on the roster. Duran has a 6-4 record in 49 games, and his ERA is a strong 2.01. He’s struck out 53 batters in 49.1 innings pitched and has a 1.18 WHIP.

Ty Madden has had a rough minor league career, but his arsenal is undeniable. He’s a prospect that could shine with the right tuning. This season, he has a 3-5 record in 22 starts, 124 K’s in 96.1 innings pitched, a 6.98 ERA, and 1.59 WHIP.

Duran would be a great addition as he is under contract through the 2027 season and could help the Tigers contend for the next three seasons.

Tigers Acquire RHP David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates

Tigers acquire: RHP David Bednar.

Pirates acquire: 3B Izaac Pacheco + Cash Considerations.

Bednar fits the need Detroit has for a veteran bullpen arm and is under contract until the end of the 2026 season. He had a rough start, but has since been great for the Pirates.

Bednar has pitched in 42 games this season, striking out 51 batters along the way. His ERA sits at 2.37 with a 1.11 WHIP to go with it.

Pacheco is a solid prospect with a lot of upside, and after the Ke’Bryan Hayes trade with the Reds, Pittsburgh could develop him as their future third baseman.

The Tigers can afford to deal some infield prospects with Kevin McGonigle, Bryce Rainer, and Max Anderson making their way through the system, so it wouldn’t suprise me if Pacheco is dealt. He is batting .285 with seven home runs, 40 RBIs, and a .921 OPS.

I’d be careful with team chemistry , Ozuna adds nothing!
