Scott Harris has finalized his first trade leading up to the deadline in a couple of days. It was a deal made within the division.

Detroit acquired Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak, both right-handed pitchers, from the Twins. In exchange, Minnesota acquired Enrique Jimenez, a catcher/first baseman that was ranked the 17th best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America’s ranks.

Jimenez slashed .246/.352/.410 with a .779 OPS, and 31 extra-base hits (including nine home runs) in his minor league career with Detroit. The 19-year-old now moves to the Twins’ farm system to continue his development.

Reviewing the Chris Paddack Trade:

It’s no surprise that the Tigers’ first move was to acquire two pitchers. They have struggled mightily on the mound in this two week stretch.

Paddack fits the need for a veteran arm, bringing seven years of experience to Detroit. This team needs more pitching. It’s been brutal dating back to the Mariners series prior to the All-Star break. It’s also no secret that the Tigers are vulnerable to injuries. Jackson Jobe’s season ending prematurely was a big blow, and some competition for the fifth spot in the rotation would be good for the team. Paddack could take that role, but don’t expect Troy Melton to go down without a fight.

Paddack’s stats are far from appealing. He has a 4.49 career ERA and has a 1-4 record with a 7.49 ERA in his last eight starts, allowing eight home runs in 39.2 innings. That’s a problematic stat sheet, but he is fresh off a brilliant start against the Dodgers in a game where he recorded his 500th career strikeout.

Paddack went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts against the defending World Series champs. He last pitched against the Tigers on June 29th. He pitched just 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts against his new team.

Paddack’s arsenal:

Four-seam fastball: This is his most frequently used pitch, at around 46% usage. It averages about 94 mph, topping out near 97.7 mph.

Changeup: His second most used pitch, around 23% usage. It averages around 84 mph and has slight arm-side fade with some natural sink.

Slider: Used around 11% of the time, averaging about 85 mph.

Curveball: Also used around 11% of the time, averaging about 78 mph and exhibiting sharp 12-6 downward movement.

Cutter: Used around 6% of the time, averaging about 88 mph.

Sinker: He rarely throws this pitch, but when he does, it averages about 93.5 mph.

Dobnak has a career 4.86 ERA in 39 games. He’s appeared for the Twins just once this season and will compete for a spot on the Tigers roster.
