Teams are now able to agree to contracts on the eve of NBA free agency, as of 6 p.m. EST., and can make signings official July 6.
The Pistons were quick to re-sign center/forward Paul Reed to a two-year, $11 million contract, per Shams Charania, on X. Reports are that only the first year of the contract is guaranteed.
Reed, 6’9” and 210 lbs., played 45 games for the Pistons last season. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and one assist per game.
Drafted in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft (pick 58), Reed played his first four seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Reed stepped up big for the Pistons in the playoffs last season without Isaiah Stewart available for the majority of the opening-round series against the New York Knicks,” wrote M Live, and now the Pistons have rewarded his performance.
This could be the first of many moves by the Pistons as they look to compete for a wide open Eastern Conference next season. Injuries to the Celtics’ Jason Tatum and the Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton have left two of the East’s top teams in limbo.
The Celtics look to be in a rebuild after trading away key players to their title run from 2024. The Pacers have been radio silent since their Game 7 defeat in this year’s NBA Finals. This leaves the Pistons, Knicks, Magic and Bucks to fight for the mantle of next season’s top team in the East.
