In the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons selected Chaz Lanier, a 6-feet 4-inch guard who last year played for the Tennessee Volunteers.

NBA.com says, “Defenders have to get in Lanier’s jersey to prevent him from shooting 3s. More than half his shots came from deep across his collegiate career, notably going 256-for-621 (41.2%) during his final three seasons.”

The Pistons ranked 17th in three-point shooting percentage last season, at 36 percent. They ranked 21st in three-pointers made, at 12.6 per game.

President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon filled a clear need with the selection of Lanier. It will be fun watching Cade Cunningham drive to the basket and dish the ball out to Lanier behind the three-point line. Look for Cunningham to notch a couple more assists per game thanks to the addition of Lanier.

For his superb performance at Tennessee, 18 points per game on 43 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent shooting from three, Lanier was named the 2024/2025 Jerry West Award winner as the nation’s best shooting guard. He was All-SEC First Team and an All-American Honorable Mention, per NBA.com.

Per Jonathan Givony of ESPN, by way of the Detroit Free Press, Lanier is “A true late bloomer who averaged 3.7 points per game over his first three collegiate seasons, Lanier turned a corner with his jumper as an upperclassman to complement his solid size, frame and 6-foot-9 wingspan. He is not much of a ball handler and will need to use his tools better defensively, but he has a clear niche to fill with the way he can space the floor and shoot off screens.”

Sounds like Lanier could be an offensive spark the Pistons need to win a wide open Eastern Conference next season.

Very likely, the selection of Lanier is just the first move of many for the Pistons front office. They could have their eyes on more immediate offensive production through any of the trades identified in my earlier article on Michigan Sports Media.
