Former Michigan forward Danny Wolf is a first round pick. The 7-foot, 250-pound junior was drafted 27th overall by the Brooklyn Nets.

Wolf played 37 games for the Wolverines last season, averaging 13.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. He was a do-it-all weapon on offense, able to post up, drive to the basket, or spot up and shoot the three.

Brooklyn got a good one. Wolf should be able to contribute right away. He has the size to play either power forward or center. He has the speed and agility and ball handling skills to play small forward.

The Nets finished last season with only 26 wins, missing the playoffs, with 56 losses. They were 12th in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Brooklyn will be looking for its four first round picks to help improve the team’s outlook moving forward. Danny Wolf can provide a winning spark each night. He has a knack for claiming rebounds and is an able passer.

Brooklyn’s other first round draft picks were guard/forward Egor Demin of BYU (eighth overall), guard Nolan Traore’ of France (19th overall) and guard Ben Saran of Israel (26th overall). The Nets also have a second round pick, 36th overall, one pick before the Pistons.

The Nets have a need at power forward. Trendon Watford played 44 games for the Nets at the position, averaging 10.2 points, but only 3.6 rebounds, at 6-feet 8-inches and 237 pounds. Wolf should be able to come in immediately and compete, improving on these numbers at the four spot.

Wolf will need to adjust to losing unless the young Nets shock the NBA and compete for a playoff spot next season. Unlike at Michigan, the Nets are not known as a winning program. The Wolverines finished last season with a 27-10 record, winning the Big Ten Tournament and reaching the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.

Looking ahead in the draft, perhaps the Nets will look to reunite Wolf with Michigan’s Vlad Goldin with their early second round pick. Let’s just hope the team doesn’t have eyes for Michigan Coach Dusty May. While recreating an NBA version of the Michigan Wolverines would make for a formidable team and fun watch, let’s keep the magic in Ann Arbor.
