Get ready for some championship golf, Detroit. LIV Golf will host its 2025 Team Championship at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort, a new public course built just last year, the first of its kind in over 20 years. 

LIV’s 13 teams will square off during the three-day event from August 22 to 24. The 54-hole tournament will determine the undisputed best team on the LIV tour and award a ridiculous $50 million purse. 

Many of golf’s best-known names and major champions will lead their teams, including Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith.

“Unlike the traditional PGA Tour experience, LIV Golf is redefining the sport with its high-energy, festival-like atmosphere. The league has branded itself with the slogan ‘Golf, But Louder,’ and Michigan fans should expect an event that feels more like a sports and music festival than a conventional tournament.” 

Tournament style is also unique. For example, “the highest-seeded teams get to choose their opponents for Friday’s quaterfinals from the lower-seeded clubs,” per LIV Golf. Format for the quarterfinals and semifinals is match play. On Sunday, to decide the championship, the tournament changes to stroke play. 

“The team with the lowest score among the clubs competing in the top tier (No. 1 through No. 4) will be crowned the Team Champions of the LIV Golf League.” 

Last year’s champion was Ripper Golf Club, with Cameron Smith, Lucas Herbert, Matt Jones, and Mark Leishman finishing three shots clear of the field at 11 under par. Ripper took home $14 million of the total $50 million purse. Second place shared $8 million, and on down. 

At present, the top seeded team for this year’s tournament would be Legion XIII, of John Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Caleb Surratt and Tom McKibbin.
