Michigan State Women’s Basketball earned a win in the NCAA Tournament. That hasn’t happened in six years. It also got crushed to end its season. While the loss itself was humbling, one game does not unravel a season that included 22 wins.

Head Coach Robyn Fralick said as much in her postgame press conference after the Spartans lost to North Carolina State, 83-49, ending a season that saw the Spartans ranked as high as 15th in the nation, per Associated Press top 25 rankings.

“A game isn’t our season,” Fralick said. “It doesn’t feel great to finish with a game like this, but there’s things that are happening in our program that we’re really proud of. We feel like we keep building. We made it a game further this year. I think it was the first NCAA Tournament win in the Michigan State program in six years, so really proud of our collective season. Really proud of our girls.”

Michigan State was nationally ranked 14 out of 19 weeks during the 2024/2025 season. The team looks like it could return 11 players from this year’s squad, including the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, junior forward Grace Vanslooten, who averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds on the season. The team could also return junior guard Theryn Hallock, who averaged 13.3 points per game.

Michigan State played small this season. Five of the six players to average more than 20 minutes this season were guards, and the team had only a slight advantage in total rebounding per game, 37.1 to 36.0. To win the Big Ten Conference and advance further in the NCAA Tournament, Coach Fralick will need to add size to the team to take the floor most often. Three out of four teams in this year’s Final Four average more rebounds per game. UCLA (42.9), South Carolina (42.2), Texas (39.7) and UCONN (37.0).

There is work to be done, but make no mistake, this was a good year. And, to emphasize Coach Fralick’s point, Michigan State is building.
