For most of the game, Ole Miss looked bigger, stronger and faster than Michigan State, leading by 10 at one point and threatening to pull away. But, as has been the case most games this season, the Spartans kept running and pushing and eventually wore down their opponent.
Ole Miss had more rebounds, 35 to 31. They had eight steals, contributing to 10 Michigan State turnovers. But Michigan State kept coming. In waves they kept pushing, hitting tough shots and staying close enough until they claimed their first lead with 7:50 left in the game.
A back and forth, shot for shot game ensued for the next several minutes. Then Michigan State hit timely buckets under two minutes, forcing Ole Miss to foul. The Spartans met the moment, hitting all their free throws to close out the game.
Jase Richardson played like a star, 10 points in each half, finishing with 20 points and six rebounds. Coen Carr hit big shots and had 15 points. Jaden Akins added 13 points and clutch free throws at the end, as did Tre Holloman, who scored 10 points.
This was a team effort. Ole Miss tested the Spartans, but the relentlessness and fearlessness of Michigan State prevailed in the end.

“Give these guys credit,” said Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo, postgame, tears in his eyes. “They bounced back in the second half. Played better. I didn’t think we were great, but that is a hell of a team we played. Toughest team I’ve played in years.”
Izzo continued, fully surrounded by a team that loves their coach.
“I love these guys… It’s simple. You know? They don’t quit.”
Moments later, Richardson said of the Spartans’ next game, “Whoever comes up, we’re ready. We’re ready. We’re ready to fight for 40 minutes. We’re ready to get to the Final Four.”
Michigan State will play either Auburn or Michigan in the Elite Eight.
