The game did not start well for Michigan State (29-6). New Mexico (27-8) jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Michigan State was able to close the gap to a two-point game at halftime, 31-29, in favor of the Lobos. The Spartans opened the second half on a tear, taking the lead in the first few minutes until New Mexico tied things at 37-37. The game would be tied again at 51-51 with just more than seven minutes left, but then Michigan State’s defense and shot-making would allow them to dribble out the clock in the end, winning 71-63.
On the question as to why his defense was so great down the stretch in the second half, Coach Tom Izzo said, “‘Cause we rested the first half. We didn’t play any in the first half. So, I’m really disappointed in that, but I’m really proud of my guys for coming back around.”

A big difference in the game was free throw shooting. Michigan State shot 28 free throws, making 67.9 percent. New Mexico shot only 10 free throws, making 50 percent.
Michigan State dominated in offensive rebounds, grabbing 16 to New Mexico’s nine. Total rebounds were 41 for the Spartans to 32 for the Lobos.
Blocks stood out, as well. Michigan State had seven to just one for New Mexico.
Michigan State now moves on to face Ole Miss (24-11) in the Sweet 16, and Izzo said the Rebels will “come at you tooth and nail, and they’re going to be good defensively and they’re going to play hard,” before asking to enjoy the win tonight against New Mexico.
Every win in the NCAA Tournament is a good win. Michigan State was tested by New Mexico, and will be better for it when they face Ole Miss.
The early odds on Michigan State and Ole Miss has the Spartans favored by 3.5, per DraftKings. The game will be Friday, March 28, 10 p.m.
