Michigan Women’s Basketball is a 6-seed in the Birmingham 3 Region of the NCAA Tournament and will open play March 21, at 11:30 a.m, on ESPN 2. An opponent has not been determined yet. Iowa State and Princeton will play March 19, at 7 p.m., to determine who plays the Wolverines.
“A six seed is great. It gives a lot of respect to our team and to the schedule we played and to the success we’ve had,” Michigan Coach Kim Barnes Arico said of the Wolverines’ seeding, per The Detroit News.
The Wolverines are 22-10 this season, with wins over Maryland and Michigan State. Iowa State has a record of 22-11, and Princeton has a record of 21-7.
Iowa State scores 77.1 points per game, giving up 66.9. They give up 14.4 turnovers per game, but take away only 13.4. Their three-point percentage is 36.0, while making 8.2 per game.
Princeton scores 66.8 points per game, giving up 56.8. They give up 14.8 turnovers per game, and take back 14.5. Their three-point percentage is 34.5, while making 6.1 per game.
Michigan scores 78.1 points per game, giving up 65.7. They give up 15.5 turnovers per game, and take away 18.2. Their three-point percentage is 35.7, while making 7.4 per game.
On the other side of the bracket, Michigan State Women’s Basketball is a 7-seed in the Spokane 1 Region and will open play March 22, at 4:30 p.m., against Harvard, a 10-seed, on ESPN News. The Crimson have a record of 24-4, the most wins in program history, and they won the Ivy League Tournament championship. The team was pumped when Michigan State was revealed as their opening round opponent.
Harvard last made the NCAA Tournament in 2007, according to GBH News. This year’s 10-seed is the best in program history.
Harvard senior guard Harmoni Turner, had this to say after learning Michigan State would be their opponent.
“Whoever we go against, we know that we can win, and I think that we have a lot of confidence in ourselves. We put in too much work to just stop at the Ivy championship.”
Harvard scores 69.4 points per game and gives up only 52.5. They give away 12.1 turnovers, but take 20.2 back from their opponents. The team’s three-point percentage is 30.8, making 7.3 per game. The Crimson grab 35.6 rebounds per game.
Michigan State scores 79.5 points per game and gives up 64.0. They turn the ball over 15.1 times per game, but take it away from opponents 22.0 times per game. The team’s three-point percentage is 33.7, making 6.9 per game. The Spartans grab an average of 37.3 rebounds per game.
If Michigan State gives Harvard the same respect as a game in the Big Ten, they should win and advance to play the region’s 2-seed, NC State.
“Right now we’re just looking forward, and we’ve got Harvard to prepare for,” said Michigan State Coach Robyn Fralick. “It’s been a while since we’ve known who we’re going to play, so I think we’re eager to get prepared and get back to work.”
