The Lions haven’t made a ton of noise during this free agency period. However, yesterday they signed linebacker Grant Stuard from Indianapolis to a 1-year fully guaranteed deal, the exact numbers are not out yet.

Stuard, 26, proved himself over the years to be a special teams ace, with over 1,300 total snaps coming from there. He has been able to work his way up the depth chart with the Colts, having started 5 games for them last year.

However, Stuard is not just a special teams guy. The former ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ had somewhat of a breakout year, racking up 40 tackles, with a career-high 19 tackles coming in Week 9’s win against Miami. He only played in 9 games last year, with 5 starts, so that explains his lack of production. However, even in his limited snaps, he played pretty well. PFF gave him an overall grade of 69.4, a run defense grade of 70.1, and a coverage grade of 65.3. Obviously, PFF isn’t necessarily the gospel on grades, but I think it shows there’s some good stuff in his film. Now, clearly he wont be pushing anyone for a starting role anytime soon, but it is always good to have depth, especially when they are very good on special teams.

Colts fans are not happy to lose him, and that’s always a good sign. Lions Special Teams Coordinator Dave Fipp had this to say about Stuard, “Number 41’s a hair on fire player, this guy’s relentless. He’s got a great story, I read it this summer, there’s a great article about him. But just a great player and I have a lot of respect for him.” He was also touted as an ‘old school’ style player, who throws his body around without a care. Sounds like the perfect guy to add to this locker room. I assume he will be taking over Jalen Reeves-Maybin’s role, as Maybin was released last week.

All in all, its not a true ‘needle moving’ type of signing, but it adds some depth we needed. Stuard could pay linebacker in a pinch if needed, but he will really make his money as a stout special teamer.
