The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with journeyman quarterback Kyle Allen. The quarterback room now has starter Jared Goff, as well as 2023 third round draft pick Hendon Hooker and Jake Fromm. This move could signal the end for Hooker’s time in Detroit.

Allen played last year in Pittsburgh, throwing just one pass, a completion for 19 yards. He has also played for Buffalo, Houston, Washington and Carolina. It was in 2019, in Carolina, that Allen stood out. That year, he threw for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions over 13 games. Allen is considered a seasoned and respected backup quarterback.

Last season, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin said that he was “Not surprised by anything that we get from Kyle Allen,” per a postgame report by Steelers Depot, after the quarterback entered the game briefly against the Dallas Cowboys.

This summer, if not sooner, Allen may force Hooker off the roster. Lions fans may recall that Hooker was inactive for the playoffs last season. Teddy Bridgewater was coaxed out of retirement to take his place as QB2 on the roster.

This is a situation worth following as the Lions continue to shape their roster heading into the NFL Draft and offseason workouts.
