We’ve entered day two of the NFL legal tampering period/free agent frenzy. The NFC North have been emptying their pockets this off-season, with the exception of our Detroit Lions.

Brad Holmes got a deal done with cornerback D.J. Reed, but it remains the only significant signing for the Lions so far this off-season. Detroit still has some obvious needs to address. Offensive guard is one of them. The market for interior offensive lineman has been impressive, but their are still some solid affordable players at the position available for Detroit, including Kevin Zeitler.

The biggest fish to fry is adding a productive pass rusher, and one just became available after the 49ers announced that they are releasing him.

The Lions Should Pursue Leonard Floyd

Detroit just released Za’Darius Smith to free up some cap space, but with that decision also came a glaring need on defense. The Lions would like to add a veteran pass rusher who’s proven to be productive.

Leonard Floyd would be a perfect fit. There’s nobody on the market that could make more sense for Detroit. Floyd is 32 years old, but unlike most players, he’s gotten stronger as his career has gone on, even into his 30s.

The 6’3″, 240-pound edge rusher has produced at least 8.5 sacks each season since the 2020 season. He’s had two double-digit sack totals in that time frame.

Floyd started his career in Chicago and finished his rookie contract there before moving on to play for the Rams, Bills, and. most recently, San Francisco.

There are so many positive factors that should lead to Detroit gunning for Floyd. He has nine years of experience in the NFL, making him a perfect veteran to pair with a first or second round rookie pass rusher from this year’s NFL Draft. His 8.5 sacks last season would have been more than any player on the Lions defense. Injuries have derailed the Lions in recent season, but Floyd has played in every game since 2020. He’s always been available for his team and if he can bring that stability to the Lions, it would be huge for their defense.

Aidan Hutchinson needs help on the opposite end of the defensive line, and Floyd would by far be the best player he’s lined up with in the trenches. It should be a no-brainer for the Lions. However, Floyd should generate a lot of interest from other teams as well. It will be fun to see if Brad Holmes can get this deal done as pass rushers continue to come off the board in free agency.
