For their first move of the off-season, the Lions have brought back one of their own, re-signing linebacker Derrick Barnes to a 3 year deal worth $25.5 million, or $8.5 million per year, with $16 million guaranteed.
Barnes, 25, has proven to be a solid young player for Detroit, having racked up 205 total tackles over a 4 year career. Last season, he unfortunately suffered a season ending injury week 3 vs Arizona, where he tore his MCL and PCL. Brad Holmes has shown he doesn’t shy away from injured players, and recovery has gotten better over the years.
Barnes’ big moment was his game sealing interception vs Tampa Bay in last year’s divisional playoffs, where he picked off Baker Mayfield over the middle with outstretched arms, locking in the Lions 2nd playoff win in over 30 years.
Obviously, $8.5 million per year is a bit high for a backup linebacker, but he won’t be a true backup next season. He was our main SAM backer last season, but the money and years tells me a different story. I believe that the Lions are bracing for the inevitable loss of Alex Anzalone, which makes sense. He is 30, and is due for a new contract after this season. I could see them bringing Alex back, but with the rise of Campbell, and now Barnes being re-signed, it’s likely that the Lions will try to keep it on the cheap side for Anzalone.
