Carlton Davis has recently made some comments that make it sound like he will not be returning to Detroit, but what does this all mean?
Davis, 28, is set to enter free agency for the first time in his career, and is widely regarded as the best available Corner this time around. What does that mean for Davis, and Detroit?
Carlton recently appeared on an interview with Mike Silver from The Athletic, where he voiced some of his regrets from the last time he was set to hit the open market, saying, “I feel like last time, I just kind of panicked – I was younger, and my mindset was: ‘I need to go ahead and just choose.’ At the time, the thinking was, ‘This is the offer, and the more you wait, the more that number’s gonna go down.’ Yeah, that can happen, but teams know your value, and right now I’m playing my best football.”
Obviously, Carlton will be doing things differently this time around, as he recently tweeted, “I won’t make the same mistake twice. If you want your defense upgraded y’all know who to pay. Turn on the Tape!” making it clear: he wants that big payday.
The Lions have a big decision to make, and reports are they don’t want to pay more than $15 million per year, which just won’t cut it, as Davis will likely see offers of $18-$20 million per year. In the interview with Mike Silver, he mentioned that he doesn’t believe the Lions will be aggressive enough in signing him, signalling his time in Detroit has likely come to an end.
The Jets are a team heavily connected to Davis, which makes sense, as Lions former Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn has taken over as Head Coach. It would be hard for Detroit to outbid teams even if they wanted to, as they have a lot of extensions coming up, and you have to prioritize youth when you want to build a dynasty.
Davis said to Silver, “For me, playing at this high level, to take less than I’m worth, I’d be doing myself a disservice and my family a disservice. I’m not doing that this time.” Essentially saying, I’ll be going to the highest bidder.
Good luck to Davis in his future, as it seems clear it won’t be in Detroit. Now, Holmes has another need to fill. There are some solid options in free agency, but the draft is a little light this year. Hopefully Ennis Rakestraw can take that next step, and show why he was a 2nd round pick. Darius Slay has also been mentioned as a possible addition, so we will have to keep our eyes peeled.
