The month of March has not been kind to the Red Wings throughout the last couple of years. It’s safe to say that this month, though still young, has thus far been a nightmare for Hockeytown.

Todd McLellan’s team faced off against the Utah Hockey Club tonight, hoping to snap a three-game losing streak. The team had maintained a playoff spot for more than a month before this losing skid and have recently fallen outside of the playoff picture. Unfortunately, tonight they slipped even further from the second wildcard spot as Utah handed Detroit a 4-2 loss on home ice.

The story coming into tonight was Carter Mazur, who, at eight years old, wrote underneath a drawing that his dream was to play for the Red Wings. Tonight his dream came true… but his dream also turned into a bit of a nightmare early in the game. In just his second shift, Mazur crashed into the boards after failing to deliver a hit on Utah and suffered a major setback. According to his father he dislocated his elbow.

“2nd shift Carter hit boards and dislocated elbow. At ER for medication and resetting elbow.

Another obstacle to overcome but knowing Carter he will prevail and return. Stevie Y(zerman), staff and many players walked in tapping Carter on leg saying comeback stronger.

Thanks for everyone coming out. This isn’t the end, that I know.” – Jeffrey Mazur, Carter’s dad wrote on Facebook.

Mazur had to battle through adversity earlier this season in the AHL, having missed 35 games because of an upper body injury.

Carter earned the call-up after scoring 11 points in the last 11 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Detroit was looking for a much needed spark, but now, their losing streak is at four-games and will have to look elsewhere for that spark.

Star defenseman Simon Edvinsson narrowly avoided injury after a dirty shot to the back of the knee by Utah Hockey Club’s Logan Cooley. The way things are going, Detroit can not avoid to get bitten by the injury bug.

The NHL trade deadline is tomorrow afternoon at 3 P.M. The Wings will play one of the best teams in hockey in under 24 hours. That team is the Washington Capitals, and the Wings will travel there looking to steal some momentum and get back in the fight for a playoff spot.
