The Lions have found their replacement for former Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson. Broncos’ Passing Game Coordinator John Morton has returned to Detroit to spearhead this talented offense. Morton was with the Lions in 2022 as the Senior Offensive Assistant, helping Johnson and Campbell install the dynamic offense.

This is a hire that will have to be looked at as time goes on. Getting this offense back to putting up franchise-record numbers will be a tough task, and one that I don’t think they expect to do. Having a familiar face come in and help QB Jared Goff take care of the ball is key, and Morton may be that guy.

Morton’s last stint as an NFL Offensive Coordinator was with the Jets back in 2017. The offense was abysmal and that is putting it lightly. With an aging Josh McCown at QB, and Matt Forte and Bilal Powell sharing carries in the backfield, Morton wasn’t exactly set up for success. Looking beyond that, his days coaching USC were successful. Coaching under HC Pete Carroll, the team went 9-4 and won the Emerald Bowl that season. With playmakers at every position, an elite offensive line, and the quarterback with tons of experience, this should be everything Morton needs to get the ball in the endzone.

Morton should be a guy that Goff can rely on to succeed at the level of play he’s shown to be capable of. Holmes and Campbell think it’s the right hire, and if they believe in him, I have faith that he can help bring a ring to Motown.
