It’s been a stale off-season for the Tigers, but finally, they have added an experienced bat to their lineup.
Gleyber Torres, who has spent his entire career in Yankees pinstripes, signed a one-year, $15 million dollar deal with the Tigers. He had a very good ALCS, which checked a box for the Tigs as they were looking for a bat with playoff experience.
Torres’ power numbers went down a bit in the regular season, but the Tigers’ front office is obviously hoping that he gets back on track in that department this season. He slashed .257/.330/.338 last year with 41 extra-base hits, 15 of those being home runs, 63 RBIs, a .709 OPS, .378 slugging percentage, and a .330 on-base percentage.
The addition of Torres could be beneficial for Detroit’s playoff run in 2025, but the signing also affects some of the young bats in Detroit’s lineup. If Torres is sliding into second base, where does that put Colt Keith? Well, there’s a chance that Keith and Spencer Torkelson rotate at first base. Tork did not live up to his 31 home run season in 2023. His 2024 season was very underwhelming. Detroit needs more production from first base. Keith could play some games at the hot corner (third base) next season as well, or it could be as simple as Keith playing second base against right-handed pitching making Torres available on the bench, and Torres play against left-handed pitching making Keith available on the bench, which is something A.J Hinch did with some positions throughout last season.
However it plays out for Keith, I’m sure we’ll get our answer during spring training.
